The Fatima Old Boys’ Association extends its deepest condolences on the passing of Professor John Agard (Fatima, 1967–1974), one of our distinguished Hall of Achievement inductees (2015).
Professor Agard’s journey is one that continues to inspire generations of Fatima men. During his years at Fatima, he made a lasting impact on the academic environment, setting a foundation of excellence that would carry him onto the global stage. His pursuit of knowledge began with A-Levels in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, leading him to the University of the West Indies (St. Augustine), where he earned his BSc in Natural Sciences before returning to Fatima to share his passion for learning as a teacher.
His academic path took him onward to the University of Manchester for his MSc, and back to UWI, where he completed his PhD in Zoology. Rising through the ranks, he became Professor, Head of Department, and a recipient of UWI’s prestigious Award for Overall Excellence (2010) and Best Department Award (2014).
Professor Agard’s contributions extended far beyond academia. He played a vital role in shaping environmental policy and scientific thought both regionally and internationally. As a member of the Caribbean Sea Commission and the CARICOM Task Force on Climate Change, and notably as a Lead Author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)—which shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize—he helped advance global understanding of environmental sustainability.
Here at home in Trinidad and Tobago, he served with distinction in numerous capacities, including as Chairman of the Environmental Management Authority (EMA). Through his work, he championed sustainable development and inspired collaboration among governments, industry, NGOs, and young people.
Professor John Agard’s legacy is one of scholarship, service, and global impact. His life reflects the very best of what Fatima seeks to instill—commitment, integrity, and excellence in service to others.
May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his legacy continue to guide and inspire us all.
Requiescat in Pace.
